Save the Date: Expert workshop on "limit temperature”

On 28 March 2023, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) invites you to partake in a public workshop entitled "Limit temperature as a requirement in the site selection procedure" in Berlin. According to the Site Selection Act Section 27 para. 4, the term "limit temperature" refers to the maximum permissible temperature on the outer surface of the waste containers in a repository for high-level radioactive waste.

Many processes that play a role in long-term safety analysis are temperature-dependent. For example, the creep of rock salt, the stress distribution in the subsurface, the swelling of clay, the activity of microorganisms, chemical reactions such as the dissolution of minerals or the adsorption of radionuclides on minerals.

What role does temperature play in a repository?

Furthermore, the temperature on the outer wall of the cask has an influence on the possible space requirement of a repository for high-level radioactive waste, as casks can be stored with less distance at higher permissible temperatures. A higher temperature on the outer surface of the waste containers may make handling or transport of the containers more difficult, or require additional protective measures.

Safety-relevant processes

Consequently, the temperature at the outer cask wall has an influence on various safety-relevant processes, and is thus a piece of the puzzle in the technical design of a repository and the evaluation of its safety.
The expert workshop offers the opportunity to learn about the current state of research in this field either on-site or online, and to join in the discussion. Save the date if you are interested in taking part.
The event is expected to take place from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. Further information on the programme and registration will follow shortly. If you have any questions, please contact us at workshop-grenztemperatur@base.bund.de.
